Buying a water container is easy. Building a reliable emergency water supply takes a little more thought. You need to decide how much to store, what containers to use, where to keep it, how to label it, when to replace it, and how to avoid contaminating it. Here's a practical way to approach emergency water storage.

Start With the Right Quantity

CDC guidance recommends storing at least one gallon per person per day for three days and trying to build a two-week supply when possible. Don't feel required to reach the larger target immediately. Build progressively. A three-day supply that actually exists is more useful than a two-week plan you never begin.

Option 1: Commercially Bottled Water

For simplicity, commercially bottled water is difficult to beat. CDC identifies unopened commercially bottled water as the safest and most reliable emergency water source. Store it according to manufacturer instructions and pay attention to dates printed on the packaging, and rotate it as appropriate. One advantage is convenience. One disadvantage is that dozens of individual bottles can create bulky storage and packaging waste.

Option 2: Fill Your Own Containers

If you fill containers yourself, choose containers designed for food or water storage. CDC recommends FDA-approved food-grade water-storage containers where possible. A good container should close tightly, be durable, be difficult to break, and be easy to pour from without contaminating the contents.

Avoid using containers that previously held toxic chemicals such as pesticides or bleach. A container doesn't become safe for drinking water simply because it has been rinsed out.

Clean Containers Before Filling Them

If you're storing tap water in reusable containers, cleanliness matters. CDC advises washing and sanitizing storage containers before use. Follow the current CDC instructions and any manufacturer recommendations for your particular container. Do not improvise stronger chemical concentrations on the assumption that "more is better."

Every emergency water container should make two things obvious: what it contains, and when it was stored. A simple label such as "DRINKING WATER — STORED SEPTEMBER 2026" takes seconds and prevents confusion later. If you maintain several containers, use a rotation system so you're not trying to remember which one is oldest.

Where Should Emergency Water Be Stored?

CDC recommends keeping stored water in a cool location, away from direct sunlight and away from toxic substances such as gasoline or pesticides. That means the best location is generally accessible, cool, protected, away from chemicals, and away from conditions likely to damage containers. Think carefully before choosing a garage, shed or attic if temperatures become extreme.

Don't Put Every Gallon in One Place

Redundancy matters. If all your water sits in one giant container and that container leaks or becomes contaminated, your entire reserve may be compromised. Consider splitting your supply among multiple containers. That also makes water easier to move.

Large Containers vs. Small Containers

Both have advantages. Large containers make more efficient use of storage space, use less packaging, and are useful for home reserves — but they can become heavy and difficult to move. Small containers are easy to carry, easy to distribute, and convenient if you need to leave — but they use more packaging and storage space. A blended system often makes sense: larger home storage plus smaller portable water.

How Often Should You Replace Stored Water?

For water you fill yourself, CDC recommends replacing it every six months. For commercially bottled water, observe the manufacturer's expiration or best-by information. Put a recurring reminder in your calendar — for example, inspect water every January and July. The easier the routine, the more likely it happens.

Don't Contaminate Water While Using It

Safe storage isn't useful if you contaminate the container every time you access it. CDC recommends avoiding touching the water or the inside of the container with your hands and using clean utensils if water must be removed manually. Containers with controlled spouts can make everyday use easier.

What If the Water Supply Is Declared Unsafe?

Follow instructions from local authorities. Do not assume a household filter automatically makes contaminated water safe — different products address different contaminants. CDC advises using bottled, boiled or appropriately treated water when tap water is unsafe, and notes that water contaminated with fuels or toxic chemicals cannot necessarily be made safe through ordinary disinfection. That's another reason stored safe water is so valuable.

Create a Water Rotation System

  1. Calculate your target.
  2. Label every container.
  3. Record the storage date.
  4. Set a calendar reminder.
  5. Inspect containers periodically for leaks or damage.
  6. Replace self-filled water on schedule.
  7. Reassess whenever the household changes.

A new family member, pet or medical need changes your calculation.

Don't Forget Portability

Your home water reserve and evacuation water shouldn't be identical. Maintain at least some water in containers you can move. And consider storing portable containers that can be filled if an evacuation becomes likely and safe water is still available.

What About Filtration?

After your water-storage foundation is established, filtration can add useful redundancy. But always ask: what contaminants is this product actually designed to address? What water sources is it appropriate for? What is its capacity? What maintenance does it require? Does it remove viruses, chemicals or only certain microorganisms/particles? Read the product specifications rather than treating "water filter" as one universal capability.
