Emergency water planning begins with a number. But it shouldn't end there.
The CDC currently recommends storing at least one gallon of water per person per day for three days, with a goal of building toward a two-week supply if possible. That gives you a useful baseline. But your actual household may need more. Let's work through it.
The Basic Emergency Water Formula
Use: number of people × number of days × 1 gallon.
For three days: 1 person = 3 gallons, 2 people = 6 gallons, 3 people = 9 gallons, 4 people = 12 gallons, 5 people = 15 gallons.
For two weeks: 1 person = 14 gallons, 2 people = 28 gallons, 4 people = 56 gallons.
That's why water preparedness deserves planning. A two-week supply for a family isn't something most people can casually toss into a backpack. Your portable evacuation water plan and your home water plan are different problems.
What Is the Water For?
That gallon-per-day baseline isn't simply about drinking. Water may also be needed for cooking, brushing teeth, basic hygiene, some medical uses, and pet care. CDC emergency-water guidance specifically notes using emergency water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth and other needs. If you live somewhere very hot — or your household has additional needs — you may need more.
Who May Need Additional Water?
Build extra capacity if your household includes pets, pregnant household members, people who are sick, people with particular medical requirements, or anyone living in a hot climate or likely to experience high heat during an emergency. The correct water plan is not simply "four people equals twelve gallons." It's "what does this household actually need?"

Three Days vs. Two Weeks
A beginner may look at two weeks of water for an entire family and immediately decide emergency preparedness requires too much storage space. Don't let the ideal prevent the useful. Start with three days. Then build toward more. A practical progression might look like: one day, then three days, then one week, then two weeks where practical. Every increase reduces dependency on normal water service.
Stored Water Comes Before Filtration
This is one of the most important ideas in water preparedness. A water filter is useful only when you have access to water the product is appropriate to treat. If you're experiencing a water interruption and don't have a usable nearby source, the filter doesn't magically produce water.
That's why your plan should begin with stored safe water, then backup filtration or treatment options. Think of filtration as redundancy. Not replacement.

What About Commercial Bottled Water?
CDC describes unopened commercially bottled water as the safest and most reliable emergency water source. It has several advantages: it's already packaged, it's easy to rotate, it's simple to distribute, and it requires little setup. The tradeoffs are cost, packaging volume and storage space. For many households, a combination of commercial bottled water and larger food-grade storage containers may make sense.
Portable Water Is Different
If you need to evacuate, you probably can't carry a family's full home water reserve. Water is heavy — one U.S. gallon weighs roughly 8.3 pounds before you include the container. That's why your evacuation plan may combine a limited portable water supply, collapsible containers, appropriate treatment or filtration options, and knowledge of where you are going and what resources will be available. Do not build an evacuation plan around carrying dozens of gallons on foot.

What About Pets?
Pets need water too. Their needs vary based on animal, size, diet, environment and health. Instead of guessing, include pet water explicitly in your household calculation and consult your veterinarian if you have questions about a particular animal's requirements.
What If You Have an Infant?
Emergency water decisions become especially important when infant formula is involved. CDC advises households using formula to consider ready-to-feed formula for emergencies because unsafe water can complicate powdered-formula preparation. Infants and people with specialized health needs are good reasons to plan beyond a generic gallon calculation.
A Simple Household Example
Imagine a household with two adults, two children, and one dog. The human three-day baseline alone is 4 people × 3 days × 1 gallon = 12 gallons. Then you add appropriate capacity for the dog and any additional household needs.
If twelve-plus gallons feels like a lot, that's useful information. It tells you water storage needs to be intentionally designed rather than left until the last minute.
Where Should Water Fit in Your Preparedness Plan?
Water should connect to four things: storage (how much safe water is already available?), portability (what can you take if you leave?), backup (how will you handle situations where stored water becomes insufficient?), and safety (how will you know whether a source is safe to drink or requires treatment?).
The CDC advises using bottled, boiled or appropriately treated water when tap water is unsafe and following local public-health instructions during water advisories.

- How many days of water do we currently have?
- Have I included pets and special needs?
- Is the water stored appropriately?
- Can some of it be transported?
- Do we have an appropriate backup treatment or filtration method?
- Does everyone know where the water is?
